About
Where does EMESP work?
EMESP spreads its important message throughout the six
counties of the East Midlands Region.
Why is engineering & technology important
in the East Midlands?
Engineers and Scientists create wealth and jobs, with about
50% of the nation’s GDP dependent on engineering,
and even more in the East Midlands with its above average
proportion of manufacturing. Professional engineers, scientists
and technologists are at the leading edge of diverse industries
such as manufacturing, media, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals,
medicine and healthcare, aerospace, computers, construction,
energy, transport, textiles and agro-industry.
Who does EMESP deal with?
EMESP represents the engineering and science professions
in the East Midlands Region to the regional development
agency (emda), Regional Assembly, Government Office of
the East Midlands, local authorities, the public, the media,
and potential members of the profession including young
people and others in education. It provides a focus for
collaboration and partnership between all those involved
in engineering and science in the East Midlands Region,
including representative bodies for employers and managers
in manufacturing and service industries. It is an important
objective that EMESP provides a single authoritative point
of contact for enquiries from other groups or requests
for nominations for involvement in them. In short, it is “a
voice for the engineering and science professions in the
East Midlands.”
How is EMESP governed?
EMESP is overseen by a Regional Committee, on which all
constituent institutions are represented, with day-to-day
management in the hands of a voluntary Executive Committee.
The activities of the EMESP are largely carried out through
projects with partners and co-sponsors. Finance for each
project is contributed by those involved, with a small
annual capitation fee from the regional branches of the
professional institutions.
What practical work does EMESP do?
Among very successful public projects for which EMESP is
responsible is the Annual Joint Institutions Prestige Lecture
held every year, with sell-out audiences of over 700. To
recognise innovative research projects and stimulate commercial
awareness in research the EMESP sponsors the East Midlands
Master’s Prize competition jointly with emda and
the leading universities in the region. In addition to
the range of inter-institutional and media work, EMESP
provides at regional level professional contributions,
for example, to Task Groups of the Regional Assembly, while
at national level EMESP is a member of the Associate Parliamentary
Engineering Group.
How can I support EMESP?
If you are a parent or work with young people, encourage
them to be aware of the wide scope that engineering, science & technology
offers for a career full of excitement, reward and fun.
If you are already a professional engineer, encourage your
institution to work with your professional colleagues in
the region to the greater benefit of all. In addition there
are always specific roles for activists within EMESP. If
you work in local or regional government or academia and
need a regional professional engineering input, please
contact us. If you are an industrialist or businessman,
encourage your professional engineering & technology
managers and staff to get involved in institutional and
EMESP work to gain networking and career development benefits.
EMESP is here to promote engineering, science & technology,
to raise its profile and thereby encourage economic innovation
and development in our East Midlands region, and thus the
prosperity of all who work in the profession. |
